OMG the night ferry .... funniest thing ever!! ...I don't really like 'space invaders', by this I mean people who come too close into your personal space and I'm not good at touchy 'close contact' so this just blew my mind!!!
I arrive at the dock at 8.30pm for 9pm departure. I pile my backpack on top of a hundred others and hand my ticket to the 'floating reception'. They point me in the direction of upstairs, stating that I'm allocated bed No.4. This in itself made me anxious, but nothing prepared me for what I was about to see when I reached the top of the stairs.....50 beds, on the floor, side by side...each bed measuring about 600mm wide. I couldn't believe it....each side of me (a male (left) and a female (right)) not more than 200mm from my head space....surely not?? ....but yes that's how it is and if I want to make Krabi by morning I'd better 'put up and shut up!". There's dim lighting for about an hour after departure but then it plunges into darkness and that's it until morning. It was hilarious to watch people trying to meander in the darkness staggering to the boats rocking motion to the 'single minging WC'. It was utter carnage...bodies everywhere....creaking, cracking, rocking and rolling I'm sure this boat wasn't sea worthy but somehow you knew this journey had been done so many times before ...you just go with it, you do become complacent after a while. I keep cracking with laughter as I write as it was so god damn funny...a fabulous experience, but certainly not for the faint hearted....I never slept a wink!
The ferry boat ready for departure
I can't believe this really happens.....there are no windows...just openings out to the ocean!
Bed No.4, my tight little space and grotesque minging sheet!!
In the dead of the night....bodies everywhere..snoring, flatulence even halitosis ...the wafts of variety continued throughout the night..you name it, it happened on this boat! I had to put my cardigan over my face to cope. The girl next to me was 'spooning' with her partner but then kept sprawling onto my space...I had no space left with invasions from both sides at one point!!
Waiting to disembark...a shadow of the people that boarded ha ha!
I arrive in Krabi after a quick minivan transfer and I like it instantly, I seem to have really taken to the towns. There's not much to see here but I'm ready for some relaxation after a few full on days. Following the The Earth House experience and resembling 'Stig of the dump' for 5 days I am so grateful for mod cons and indulge in a warm shower and a pampering session of nails, hair etc....it was absolute heaven....I feel alive again and sleep that night continually for 14 hours!!!
I was recommended to visit (a very big thank you again for this tip!!) a little island called Railay, which is about a half hour long tail boat ride from Krabi. I'm so glad I followed this lead up as it is an incredible little place.....absolutely gorgeous, filled with caves, hidden and spectacular beaches, jungle, monkeys and a challenging, steep but incredible climb to a lagoon and view point.
A reggae bar on the east coast beach...I loved this place, my favourite bar in Thailand.
The lagoon...not a great picture but my battery ran out grrr!!
The rope climb...it was definitely steeper than it looks!!
Cave formation everywhere on the island.
Selfies all look the same I know ...sorry!
This place is a little paradise, completely full of romance and 'loved up' couples....I honestly did really enjoy watching people in their happiness, it made me happy. I would definitely recommend and like to revisit this place some day...hopefully though not alone!
So this brings my time in Thailand to an end....I'm going to miss this place. The south is paradise, full of beauty and mesmerising islands. The north just oozes charm and character....I loved both, but if I'm honest the north claimed my heart.
There's a few little random things I'd like to share...just things that I see on my travels which amuse or capture me, seems apt to show them as my time here comes to an end. Goodbye for now Thailand...thanks for having me!
Superman's the same wherever you are in the world ...so cute..
The commute to work
Babies being held on scooters...this scares the life out of me and so common... this was father driving, two year old in footwell, mum at back holding baby.....I couldn't look
Axis lads...I expect you all to be able to do this by the time I return...Lisa will hold you all up ha ha!!
I want to help, just a few girly tips you know....but what can you do?
Good job I didn't arrive on this boat!!
My gran would go spare at the state of these net curtains...such a cool place!
Girl power!....the women installing the rebar for the surface drainage infrastructure!!
Is that a zebra crossing??
Way to a good time hey....of course i went!!
No mask, PPE...that's gonna be sore in the morning!
Always good to inspect the back passage hey Kempy?!!
I thought this was fake until the guide touched it and it moved...it was the size of a mans hand!
Loved these little lads....think the UK's younger generation should take a few tips from these.
Check the name above the door....the monks looked at me gone out chuckling away....ahhh it's the little things.
I head off to Cambodia on an early flight in the morning. I heard a few mixed things about Cambodia so am a little nervous about it but I'm going to go with a open mind and see how i feel in a few days.......
